State Govt Proposes Special Body to Rescue Mula Mutha Rivers from Pollution

28 Apr 2026

The Maharashtra state government is contemplating the formation of a special authority to oversee the rejuvenation of the Mula and Mutha rivers, aiming to resolve the persistent discharge of untreated sewage. This new body would centralize the management of massive infrastructure projects across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, including the multi-crore Riverfront Development (RFD) and several delayed Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The proposal follows a high-level inspection by state ministers in April 2026, where the urgent need to identify the "root causes of pollution" was emphasized to prevent the rivers from becoming mere concrete channels.

The move comes at a critical juncture; as of late April 2026, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) can only treat 477 MLD of the 980 MLD of sewage generated daily. While the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-funded project aims to bridge this gap, it has missed its March 2026 deadline. Environmental groups like Jeevitnadi have expressed skepticism, arguing that a new administrative layer may not help unless it holds local bodies accountable across regional boundaries. They warn that "beautification" through the RFD project which is currently 90% complete on the Sangamwadi stretch remains secondary to the ecological necessity of fully treating the city's wastewater.
