PMC Clears 30 Tonnes of Waste Near Balewadi Sports Complex After Resident Outcry

01 May 2026

Baner-Balewadi, once the poster child for Pune’s Smart City Mission, is currently facing a ‘’smart’’ crisis as residents battle overflowing trash, erratic waste collection, and the hazardous smoke of garbage burning. Despite a decade of promises including "complete streets" and upgraded infrastructure, internal roads and the banks of the Ramnadi have turned into informal dumping grounds. Residents allege that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has failed to maintain basic civic standards, forcing citizens to deal with mounting filth and deteriorating roads.

The situation reached a breaking point in April 2026, leading to an emergency meeting at the Aundh-Baner ward office. While the PMC recently cleared 30 tonnes of waste from near the Balewadi Sports Complex and addressed chronic spots at Sai Chowk, residents remain skeptical. Activists and locals are demanding a permanent shift from sporadic cleanups to a consistent, automated system including flying squads to catch illegal dumpers and strict on-the-spot fines—to finally bring the "smart" back to one of Pune's fastest-growing residential hubs.
