In a positive development for Pune’s environmental efforts, the central government has allocated ₹27 crore to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for improving nine sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the city. The STPs located at Mundhwa, Kharadi, Vitthalwadi, Naidu Hospital, Erandwane, Baner, Bhairoba, Bopodi, and Tanajiwadi are set to receive technology upgrades and system improvements. The grant has been awarded under the national-level ‘Jal Hi Amrit’ scheme as recognition for PMC’s strong performance in sewage management. Out of the total amount, ₹18.90 crore has already been disbursed, and officials confirmed it will go towards modernising electrical and drainage systems at these sites.
Alongside this initiative, the PMC is also constructing 10 new STPs under the river rejuvenation project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These new treatment facilities, along with the upgraded existing ones, aim to ensure that sewage is treated effectively before being discharged into Pune’s rivers. Officials believe these projects will go a long way in improving water quality and supporting the city’s larger goal of river conservation and sustainable urban development.
