60 Metre Foot Overbridge Installed at Wakad Metro Station Giving Pedestrians Safe Highway Crossing
A 60 metre foot overbridge connecting the upcoming Wakad Metro station with the opposite side of the Mumbai Bengaluru national highway has been successfully installed over two consecutive nights in a carefully coordinated operation involving traffic diversion to service roads deployment of traffic police and Quick Response Teams and the use of a 160 tonne crane to lift and position the structure with a 70 tonne crane kept on standby as a safety measure. The bridge designed as a public utility open to all pedestrians including those not using the Metro will significantly reduce dangerous pedestrian vehicle conflict at Wakad Chowk one of Pune's busiest intersections and a key transit point for commuters travelling between Pune and Mumbai. A PITCMRL official said the FOB directly connects the Wakad Metro station with the opposite side of the highway improving access to what is expected to become one of the highest ridership stations on the 23.3 km Hinjewadi to Civil Court Metro Line 3 corridor which has already completed end to end trial runs across its entire length and is now awaiting statutory approvals for phased commercial operations.
Wakad Chowk is simultaneously being developed into a comprehensive multimodal transport hub integrating Metro services with PMPML buses intercity buses feeder transport private vehicles and pedestrian infrastructure to strengthen last mile connectivity for the large number of commuters who pass through the junction daily. The first phase of Metro Line 3 between Maan and RK Laxman Museum is expected to open before the line is extended to Civil Court for integration with the existing Pune Metro network. Once fully operational the corridor is projected to slash travel time between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar from the current 90 minutes to just 45 minutes bringing transformative relief to thousands of IT professionals and daily commuters who endure some of the worst traffic congestion in the city on this stretch every single working day.
