PMC Admits Mistakes and Promises to Redesign Remaining 8.8 km of Pune Riverfront Development Project
Pune Municipal Corporation PMC commissioner has announced that the remaining 8.8 km of the Pune Riverfront Development Project will be completely redesigned with greater environmental sensitivity including efforts to retain heritage trees protect natural streams and avoid ecologically damaging interventions along the Mula Mutha riverbank.
The decision follows a site visit by a Rajya Sabha MP senior civic officials environmental experts and Pune River Revival volunteers who highlighted heritage trees biodiversity rich zones and natural watercourses along the remaining stretch. All construction on the remaining riverfront will remain on hold until the new design is finalised and placed before stakeholders within approximately one month.
The Maharashtra environment and climate change department has separately ordered PMC the water resources department and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to conduct a thorough inquiry into the RFD project following formal complaints alleging severe environmental violations including a flawed hydraulic report artificial narrowing of the riverbed and PMC's failure to hold mandated meetings.
However activists argue PMC must first correct damage already caused by previously constructed sections before moving ahead. One activist pointed out that Pune generates around 1500 MLD of sewage daily of which only 477 MLD is treated meaning barely 30 percent is processed with the rest flowing directly into the river untreated. He stressed that funds should first be directed toward achieving 100 percent sewage treatment rather than cosmetic riverbank beautification and that no further trees should be felled under any circumstances.
