PMPML to Trial Double Decker Buses on 10 Pune Routes From July 21 on Corridors Without Metro or BRT

15 Jul 2026

Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd PMPML is set to conduct fresh trials of electric double decker buses on 10 routes across the city starting July 21 focusing specifically on corridors not served by Metro or Bus Rapid Transit services where public transport demand remains high and connectivity gaps exist. Key routes selected for evaluation include Hadapsar to Wagholi and Hadapsar to Swargate among others. Officials from Switch Mobility the company supplying electric double decker buses to Mumbai's BEST undertaking recently met PMPML and confirmed one bus would be available for trials on July 20 with on road testing beginning the following day with representatives of both organisations present during the exercise.

PMPML had previously trialled a double decker bus in the Hinjewadi area in September 2025 but that corridor is now set to be served by Metro Line 3 making it unsuitable for further evaluation as passenger demand for bus services there may decline once Metro operations begin. The earlier trial also highlighted certain operational challenges prompting the authority to identify entirely new routes for fresh assessment. PMPML Chairman and Managing Director confirmed the objective is to evaluate suitability on non Metro non BRT corridors before taking a final decision on introducing double decker buses as a regular service option for Pune commuters seeking better public transport on routes currently underserved by rapid transit infrastructure.
