CM Sets 2028 Deadline for 43 km HCMTR as Pune Gets High Powered Push for Three Major Traffic Projects
Chief Minister chaired a high powered committee meeting in Mumbai on Monday directing officials to expedite three major traffic relief projects for Pune including the 43.6 km High Capacity Mass Transit Route HCMTR the internal ring road and a proposed underground tunnel network for which a fresh alignment survey has been ordered. The CM set a 2028 completion target for the HCMTR project which will connect to existing Metro lines and is expected to reduce road traffic by nearly 30 percent. A special purpose vehicle comprising PMC and PMRDA will be formed to raise funds and execute both the HCMTR and inner ring road projects within the deadline. The state government also decided to provide 30 percent of required government land free to PMC for the HCMTR project to ease financial and acquisition burdens. Deputy CMs and Pune guardian minister were present while PMC PCMC chiefs and Pune additional police commissioner gave presentations on the city's traffic congestion challenges.
The meeting also brought to light a three year old pending proposal by Pune city police to appoint a DIG rank officer dedicated to traffic management with two deputy commissioners as support a proposal that remains stuck with the state home department despite repeated follow ups. Officials said the tunnel network proposal involves an underground road grid across the city for which the CM has directed a fresh alignment survey before further planning proceeds. Residents and commuters have long demanded decisive action on Pune's worsening traffic situation and Monday's high level intervention signals that the state government is treating urban congestion in one of Maharashtra's fastest growing cities as a priority issue that can no longer be addressed through incremental measures alone.
