Rs 22.8 Crore Rakshak Chowk Flyover Damaged in First Monsoon Just Two Months After Opening
The surface layer of the newly built Rakshak Chowk flyover on Aundh BRTS Road has been damaged barely two months after it opened to traffic on May 22 raising serious concerns about construction quality on the Rs 22.8 crore structure that provides signal free connectivity for commuters from Kiwale Ravet and nearby areas towards Aundh. Residents alleged the flyover failed to withstand even its first monsoon with loose sand and gravel from the damaged stretch making commuting dangerous for two wheeler riders while small potholes have also developed near the PMPML bus stop on the same stretch. The flyover had already attracted controversy before and after inauguration over its steep gradient an issue raised by the local MP and commuters following which PCMC conducted a safety audit that declared the structure secure but imposed a precautionary speed limit of 30 kmph.
PCMC officials maintained the damage was not major saying the bituminous concrete layer was removed at one location where a concrete base beneath the joint caused the surface to deteriorate but insisted there was no structural deficiency and that repairs were already underway. Residents however questioned how a brand new Rs 22.8 crore flyover could show surface damage after just two months and a few spells of rain. The incident adds to PCMC's mounting monsoon road repair challenges with civic data showing 928 potholes repaired across the city so far while 516 more identified by residents and inspections remain pending repair raising broader questions about construction standards and post completion monitoring of civic infrastructure across Pimpri Chinchwad.
