90 Minutes for 2 km and 5 Minutes Just to Leave Home as Pune Sets a New Low for Monday Morning Commutes
Pune residents faced one of their worst Monday commutes in recent memory as bumper to bumper traffic paralysed almost every major route across the city with commuters reporting over an hour to cover the stretch from Bitwise office in Baner to Balewadi Bridge while an Aundh resident said it took five minutes just to drive out of her society gate. On Sus Road residents reported taking nearly one and a half hours to cover just 2 km with school vans carrying children also stuck in the gridlock. The chaos extended beyond morning peak hours with an unusual 1.5 km snarl reported in Sangamwadi towards Sancheti Chowk as late as 3pm while the NIBM Salunkhe Vihar Road stretch from Fakhri Hills to Parmar Residency emerged as one of the worst bottlenecks with indiscriminate roadside parking near a function hall reducing the carriageway to almost a single lane causing daily routine gridlock for area residents.
Traffic police attributed much of the chaos to truck breakdowns at critical junctions with Deputy Commissioner of Police traffic saying a breakdown at the Mundhwa Y junction chowk caused serious jams across Mundhwa and Keshavnagar while long queues also formed on the Pune Ahilyanagar highway and Katraj Dehu Road bypass at Sus and Bavdhan. Potholes were identified as another major contributor with Satara Road, NDA Road in Warje, Mundhwa Road, and Katraj Phursungi Road, all seeing traffic snarls during peak hours and even a single small pothole on Karve Road triggering a serious evening jam. Additional Commissioner of Police confirmed that pothole related traffic issues have been formally communicated to senior PMC officials with a request for urgent repairs as the combination of road damage, heavy vehicle breakdowns and peak hour pressure pushes Pune's traffic management system to its absolute limits.
