Court Order Attachment Stayed but PMC Now Faces 30 Day Deadline to Fix All Pending Land Compensation Cases
Days after a court ordered attachment of the municipal commissioner's chair over delays in paying compensation in the Uruli Devachi Phursungi landfill land acquisition case, the PMC standing committee chairman has directed the civic administration to prepare a comprehensive action plan for all pending land acquisition matters within one month. The directive was issued during the committee's weekly Thursday meeting with the chairman instructing a department wise review of all pending cases related to land acquisition transferable development rights TDR and cash compensation with a report to be submitted within 30 days. The Uruli Devachi Phursungi case relates to compensation for land acquired nearly two decades ago for PMC's garbage depot with affected landowners still awaiting TDR or cash compensation despite land acquisition proceedings having been completed years ago. The court's attachment order was stayed after PMC submitted an affidavit assuring it would deposit nearly Rs 12 crore with the district collector by August 11.
The standing committee chairman said complying with court orders is the corporation's legal responsibility and that the land acquisition and legal departments must closely monitor every pending case to prevent such situations from recurring. He directed an internal inquiry to identify reasons behind delays and called for accountability to be fixed wherever lapses have occurred. The chairman stressed the need for a stronger coordination and monitoring mechanism to ensure timely compliance with court orders across all land acquisition cases citywide. The episode has highlighted a systemic failure within PMC's land acquisition machinery where compensation remains pending in multiple cases for years after proceedings are completed leaving landowners with no choice but to approach courts for relief that the civic administration should have proactively provided.
