Pune’s ₹400-Crore Tunnel Dream Faces Reality Check

06 Oct 2025

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has begun a pre-feasibility study for the proposed 14.5 km Yerawada–Katraj twin tunnel project, aimed at improving north-south connectivity in the city. The study comes amid objections from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which has questioned the project’s economic and technical feasibility. PMRDA officials clarified that the consultancy has already been appointed and data collection is underway, emphasizing that the project has not been shelved. “We are still evaluating its viability to find a solution acceptable to all stakeholders,” said a senior PMRDA official. The proposed twin tunnels would have multiple entry and exit points and are part of PMRDA’s ₹4,503 crore annual budget, with ₹400 crore earmarked for this initiative.

However, PMC officials have raised serious concerns about practicality, land acquisition costs, and overlapping infrastructure. They argued that creating entry and exit ramps on already congested roads may prove unfeasible and that the alignment overlaps with the existing underground Metro corridor, making the project potentially redundant. Traffic experts have long debated whether such large-scale tunneling is a sustainable fix for Pune’s congestion. While PMRDA views the tunnel as a transformative step to ease traffic and reduce travel time, PMC insists on a detailed cost-benefit analysis before proceeding, warning that the high construction and land costs could outweigh its long-term benefits.
