Katraj Chowk, one of Pune’s busiest traffic junctions, has tragically turned into a danger zone for commuters, especially two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. In the past three years, the spot has witnessed a disturbing rise in fatal accidents, with seven lives lost in 2023 and 2024 alone. Poor road design, non-functional streetlights, absence of pedestrian crossings, and weak enforcement of traffic rules have made the junction a nightmare. Locals say near-misses happen almost daily, particularly at night when visibility drops. Despite repeated appeals, corrective measures from civic authorities and traffic police remain largely missing, leaving residents fearful and frustrated.
The congestion is further fueled by PMPML buses and heavy vehicles violating route restrictions, worsening traffic jams that stretch to Kondhwa Road, Satara Road, and Navale Bridge. Long queues, 30-minute delays over a 200-metre stretch, and frequent signal jumping by two-wheelers have only added to the chaos. Ongoing flyover construction has made matters worse, but police say they are trying to manage the situation with strict monitoring and additional personnel during peak hours. Citizens, however, continue to demand urgent action-better signage, safer road design, and strict regulation of heavy vehicles-before more lives are lost at Katraj Chowk.
