4 TBMs Arriving in Pune in November, Swargate-Katraj Underground Metro is Finally Getting Real

21 Aug 2026

4 tunnel boring machines, inspected at their manufacturing facility in Chennai and currently being assembled, are expected to arrive in Pune in November to begin underground tunnel construction for the 5.46 km Swargate-Katraj metro extension. Preparatory work is already underway with shaft excavation started at Market Yard station on Monday and the launching shaft near Swargate opposite Nilyama theatre being readied for the TBMs. Once the machines arrive, they will be assembled and lowered underground at the Swargate launching shaft with two TBMs working from the Swargate side and two from the Katraj side, all four eventually converging and making their final exit at Padmavati station. Maha-Metro director of works confirmed that given the rocky strata along the route, tunnelling speed is expected to be around 10 metres per day per machine, similar to the pace achieved during Phase 1 of Pune Metro construction.

The TBMs will operate at a depth of approximately 28 metres below ground level, excavating through rocky strata in some of Pune's most densely populated southern neighbourhoods, making this the most technically challenging component of the entire Pune Metro project. Once completed, the Swargate-Katraj corridor will give commuters a direct underground metro connection between two of south Pune's most congested and heavily trafficked points, reducing pressure on the existing road network and improving connectivity to major residential, commercial and transport hubs across the area. For residents of Katraj, Kondhwa, Undri and surrounding areas who endure some of the worst daily traffic conditions in the city, the underground metro represents a genuine long term shift in how south Pune moves. The arrival of the TBMs in November will be the moment this project stops being a promise and starts becoming a physical reality beneath the streets of Pune.
