Pune Metro Line 3 Ready for Three Weeks but CMO Yet to Confirm Date and Chief Guest for Inauguration
The first phase of Pune Metro Line 3 covering the 13 km stretch between Maan and RK Laxman Museum in Balewadi comprising 12 stations has been ready for operations for nearly three weeks but its inauguration remains stuck as the Chief Minister's Office CMO is yet to confirm a date or chief guest despite PMRDA sending a formal letter seeking a response. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety CMRS granted provisional authorisation to the stretch on July 23 after the project agency submitted compliance reports on CMRS observations following the inspection conducted from July 5 to 8. Citizens groups and IT professionals have urged the government to open the Metro without delay or fanfare pointing out that the District Court to Swargate section opened just five days after CMRS approval and the Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi section began operations 15 days after safety clearance making the current three week wait unusually long by comparison.
The 23.3 km Hinjewadi Shivajinagar Metro project implemented by PMRDA through Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited is India's first Metro under the public private partnership model being developed by a Tata Group Siemens joint venture with Prime Minister Narendra Modi having laid its foundation stone on December 8 2018. The project has faced repeated delays with the latest completion deadline extended to March 31 2027 and the remaining 11 stations expected to open in phases with technical issues at Baner and Shivajinagar stations contributing to further delay. Commuters especially IT professionals making the daily Hinjewadi commute expressed exasperation saying that even after safety clearance the stretch sits idle over the formality of finding an appropriate inauguration guest while thousands of daily commuters continue to endure the notorious road congestion that this Metro line was built specifically to address.
