54 km of Industrial Corridor in Ruins, Minister Orders Emergency Repairs With Day-Wise Deadlines on Talegaon-Chakan Road
Public works minister on Friday directed officials to urgently repair the heavily damaged Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur corridor, ordering restoration of 40 km of the 54 km stretch within two days and repairs on the severely damaged 14 km MIDC section within four days. The road, a crucial industrial and traffic corridor, has deteriorated significantly during the monsoon causing serious hardship to motorists with officials instructed to immediately fill potholes, repair shoulders and carry out necessary restoration work on priority. PWD has also planned to widen nearly 12 km of the corridor over the next two months to address rising traffic volumes. Rs 59 crore was sanctioned for the 54 km road project with work orders issued in January 2026, but utility shifting issues and difficulties in procuring bitumen amid global supply disruptions slowed progress significantly before the monsoon arrived and worsened road conditions further.
The state government had earlier decided that PWD rather than NHAI would undertake repairs on the road for a year, citing urgency and lessons from last year's experience. With conditions worsening rapidly during monsoon, the department has now accelerated repair works under the minister's strict directions with day-wise completion deadlines set for each section. Meanwhile, a long-term upgrade of the entire Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur corridor will be taken up by Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation MSIDC with work likely to begin in three months. The upgrade is expected to significantly increase the road's traffic handling capacity and address the recurring congestion and deterioration that has made this vital industrial corridor one of the most complained about stretches in the Pune Metropolitan Region for years running.
