Deputy CM Orders Metro Feasibility for Chakan-Rajgurunagar and Talegaon-Shikrapur as Industrialists Threaten to Leave
Deputy Chief Minister on Sunday directed Maha Metro to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a DPR for two new metro routes, Chakan to Rajgurunagar and Talegaon to Shikrapur, while inspecting ongoing road repairs in Chakan alongside the industry minister. Maha Metro has already prepared a DPR for a Chakan to Nashik Phata metro connection and the Deputy CM has now sought to extend it further to Rajgurunagar while proposing the Talegaon-Shikrapur route as a separate corridor. The visit came after industrialists in Chakan threatened to relocate earlier this month citing poor roads, traffic congestion and crumbling infrastructure, following which the state government appointed the Pune district collector as nodal officer to coordinate between MIDC, PMRDA, PWD and MSIDC. A 10-month deadline has been set for completing infrastructure works in and around Chakan with authorities targeting completion ahead of schedule, while MIDC roads are being targeted for completion before March next year.
For immediate road repairs, the Deputy CM said conventional tar patching is unsuitable during monsoon and that alternative technologies including polymer techno patches, M60 ready-mix concrete and precast panels are being deployed, technologies already used successfully in Thane, on the Mumbai-Goa highway and in Nashik. The draft development plan for Chakan Municipal Council will be approved on priority, MIDC has allotted land to PMRDA for a waste processing facility and the water supply minister is expected to visit Chakan this week to discuss water scarcity issues. Industry minister said Chakan remains one of India's biggest industrial hubs and that none of the industrialists who attended his meeting confirmed plans to relocate, taking a swipe at opposition parties for trying to gain political mileage from the issue. For Chakan's thousands of workers and businesses, the real test will not be the promises made on Sunday but whether the 10-month deadline actually delivers the roads, drainage, streetlights and infrastructure that should have been in place years ago.
