Katraj Chowk is Already a Nightmare, Now Metro Land Handover Threatens to Make it Completely Unbearable
PMC has decided to hand over a land parcel at Katraj Chowk for Metro construction, but commuters and residents fear the move will significantly worsen an already choking situation at the junction with no clear traffic management plan in place. Katraj Chowk is currently being squeezed from multiple directions, with Maha Metro constructing an underground tunnel, NHAI building a flyover and PMC along with traffic police responsible for managing the resulting chaos, yet a local corporator said there is complete coordination failure with motorists spending nearly 30 minutes to travel barely 1 km around the junction. The Metro's underground Swargate to Katraj corridor will terminate at Katraj Chowk and construction is expected to continue for at least two years, with residents warning that conditions will worsen dramatically once tunnel boring machines are lowered for excavation. The corporator has suggested shifting the PMPML bus terminus from Katraj Chowk to a reserved plot near Katraj Ghat Road to reduce surface congestion.
Residents said delays in the NHAI flyover project have already added significantly to daily misery and demanded that authorities widen roads towards Kondhwa and better regulate PMPML bus movement at the junction. Mayor has directed PMC to convene a joint meeting and conduct an on-site inspection of the chowk, but commuters who have been enduring this situation for months remain sceptical about whether yet another meeting will translate into actual relief. With three agencies working simultaneously at one of south Pune's most critical junctions and no unified traffic management plan, Katraj Chowk has become a symbol of how infrastructure development can create as much suffering as it eventually promises to solve. For the thousands of daily commuters passing through it, the next two years of construction will be a severe test of patience, road quality and civic coordination.
