Barricading Starts on Nagar Road as Ramwadi-Wagholi Metro Groundwork Finally Gets Going After Long Wait
Groundwork for the crucial Ramwadi to Wagholi Metro stretch has finally begun with initial barricading being set up on Nagar Road ahead of Ramwadi Metro station to facilitate geotechnical and soil surveys before actual construction commences. The stretch is particularly significant because it involves a double-decker structure with the Metro viaduct at the top level and a six-lane elevated road constructed directly beneath it, both supported by the same pillars with no separate foundations planned. Phase 1 of the project will cover 4.7 km from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Chowk, including four new stations at Vimannagar, Somnathnagar, Kharadi Bypass and Tuljabhavani Chowk, with the majority of the viaduct aligned above the existing Nagar Road. Maha Metro officials said geotechnical surveys and soil testing will begin in the next few days with actual construction to follow, and confirmed that Metro had initiated the bidding process four months ago to appoint a construction agency.
Regular commuters on Nagar Road have raised urgent concerns about the need for a detailed traffic management plan before barricading reduces available road space further on an already stressed corridor. Residents pointed out that wrong-way driving is already rampant between Yerawada and Wagholi, bottlenecks at major junctions and U-turns remain serious concerns, and adding construction barricades without addressing these existing issues will significantly worsen daily commutes. A Vimannagar resident urged authorities to announce all traffic changes well in advance saying overnight closures or sudden movement changes create dangerous confusion. Metro, traffic police and PMC officials have already conducted joint inspections of the entire stretch. For a corridor that serves thousands of daily commuters heading to Kharadi, Wagholi and beyond, getting the construction phase traffic management right will be as important as the infrastructure itself.
