Rs 426 Crore Approved, High-Power Committee Meets, Hinjewadi Finally Gets a Serious Infrastructure Action Plan
The first meeting of the high-power committee formed to address Hinjewadi's long-standing infrastructure crisis was held at the Pune Collectorate on Friday with Rs 426 crore approved for development of internal roads in the IT Park area and MIDC and PMRDA directed to initiate action immediately on priority locations witnessing severe traffic congestion. The committee emphasised that road repairs alone cannot solve Hinjewadi's traffic problem and pushed for an integrated transport system covering Metro connectivity, public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and cycling facilities. A proposal for 19.1 km of last-mile connectivity roads linking Metro stations with IT companies, residential societies and nearby villages has been made, covering 7.225 km in the PMRDA area and 11.974 km in the MIDC area, with dedicated footpaths, cycle tracks, tactile pathways, safe pedestrian crossings, street lighting and directional signage planned along all routes. The road development plan will also include stormwater drainage, water and sewage pipelines, dedicated utility corridors for electricity and optical fibre, and gas pipeline provisions to minimise repeated road excavation for utility works in future.
A scientific traffic study has been directed to be conducted immediately with findings to form the basis for strengthening public transport and developing a transit hub in Hinjewadi. Officials have been asked to examine feasibility of using available land for a PMPML depot, explore alternative depot locations and submit reports accordingly. Discussions are underway with Tata regarding water from Mulshi Dam to address long-term water requirements with electricity demand also rising prompting directions for a report on land needed for a new MSEDCL substation. On security, AI-based CCTV cameras will be installed with district administration funding while entry of heavy construction vehicles has already been restricted during peak hours. Waste from Hinjewadi will be managed through PCMC with gram panchayat areas transporting waste to PCMC facilities. Pune District Collector will visit Hinjewadi next week and all departments have been asked to submit action-taken reports before his visit.
