5.5 km Underground, Five Stations, TBMs Arriving Soon, Swargate-Katraj Metro Project Enters Its Most Critical Phase

10 Oct 2026

A long-pending proposal to hand over approximately 7,000 square feet of land in Dhankawdi to Maha Metro for an underground station entry and exit structure on the 5.5 km Swargate-Katraj Metro route has been tabled before PMC’s City Improvement Committee CIC and is expected to receive approval within the next few days following joint inspections already conducted by PMC and Maha Metro. The proposal will subsequently be referred to PMC’s general body and standing committee for final approvals. Maha Metro has already begun groundwork on the Swargate-Katraj underground Metro route which will have five underground stations and tunnel boring machines TBMs are expected to arrive next month after which excavation will begin simultaneously from both ends. Barricades have already been installed at various points along Satara Road to support the ongoing preparatory work.

In a separate proposal before CIC, a local corporator has tabled a plan to develop a public garden in Wagholi which has been part of PMC since 2021 but remains deprived of basic public amenities despite its inclusion in civic limits. The corporator said a plot has been identified for the garden and urged PMC to expedite steps to develop the green space for Wagholi’s rapidly growing residential population. For Pune’s south corridor commuters, the Dhankawdi land approval will remove one more procedural hurdle from a project that promises to transform connectivity between Swargate and Katraj through an underground Metro system that avoids the notoriously congested surface road network. With TBMs arriving next month and excavation set to begin from both ends, the Swargate-Katraj Metro is now firmly in its most physically consequential phase of execution.
