Nearly 450 residents across La Gloriosa, Silicon Bay and Nyati Enchanted societies in Wadgaon Sheri woke up to chaos on Wednesday morning after a private landowner dug up and barricaded a key access road overnight citing plans to develop his family's property and claiming the road passed through private farmland being used for trespassing. The sudden closure disrupted an access route that residents said they had used daily for 15 years, leaving children unable to reach school as buses and vans were blocked from entering the societies, working professionals stranded during peak morning hours and residents deeply anxious about emergency vehicle access. One resident said the thought of an ambulance being unable to reach them or a patient being unable to be rushed out was not a hypothetical concern but a real and immediate danger. The landowner however defended the closure saying an 80-foot-wide riverside road is already available to residents, the land belongs to his family and the matter should not be given a political colour.
Residents launched a signature campaign demanding intervention from civic authorities and elected representatives, arguing that they purchased their homes when the access road was already in use and had built 15 years of daily life around it. They said the issue is not about challenging the landowner's ownership rights but about ensuring that residents were given adequate notice and time to plan alternative access before an overnight closure disconnected hundreds of families from their own homes. The local corporator said the matter was raised with PMC following a meeting with affected residents on Wednesday and that PMC officials have been deputed to visit the site on Thursday morning. For three housing societies whose residents never anticipated that the road they have used every single day for a decade and a half could vanish by morning, the Wadgaon Sheri road blockade is a stark reminder of how vulnerable urban residents can be when private land disputes intersect with essential civic access routes.
