Bombay HC Dismisses Farmers Petition Against Purandar Airport, Clears Major Legal Hurdle for Greenfield Project

25 Sep 2026

The Bombay High Court on September 22 dismissed a petition by farmers opposing land acquisition for the proposed Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje Greenfield International Airport at Purandar, clearing a significant legal hurdle for the project and observing that selecting an airport site is a technical and policy matter for experts in which the court is not an appropriate authority to intervene. The court however clarified that farmers retain the right to approach concerned authorities over land acquisition and compensation adequacy through available legal remedies. Following the order, the state government has accelerated land acquisition with 96 percent of farmers in Vanpuri, Kumbharvalan, Udachiwadi, Ekhatpur, Munjwadi, Khanwadi and Pargaon having consented to acquisition. Around 910 hectares have already been acquired with approximately Rs 3,875 crore paid in compensation and the government has extended the consent window from September 25 to October 10 with the overall acquisition process targeted for completion by October 20.

Land for which consent is not received by October 10 will be compulsorily acquired with affected farmers losing eligibility for benefits under the rehabilitation policy. Pune district collector urged all farmers to use the extended deadline saying the government has provided a substantial package in farmers' interests and that consent-based acquisition will provide a 10 percent return along with other rehabilitation benefits. He also appealed to farmers holding land jointly to resolve internal disputes and accept compensation to prevent payments from being delayed in court proceedings. For a project that has faced years of opposition, legal challenges and repeated delays, the HC dismissal combined with 96 percent consent and a clear October 20 acquisition deadline marks the closest Purandar Airport has ever come to moving from contested proposal to confirmed ground-level reality.
