January 2028 Deadline Set for Saswad Transmission Project That Will Power Purandar Airport and Its Entire Growth Belt

27 Oct 2026

Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited Mahatransco has planned a Rs 740 crore power transmission project in the Saswad-Kodit area to meet the anticipated electricity demand from the proposed Purandar airport and its associated development including an IT park and new industrial establishments, with a January 2028 completion target aimed at establishing transmission infrastructure ahead of the airport’s expected operations. The project envisages a 400/220 kV substation at Saswad with a total transformation capacity of 1,000 MVA comprising two interconnecting transformers each of 500 MVA, a 125 MVAr bus reactor and other required electrical equipment along with provisions for future capacity expansion to cater to rising demand as development progresses. Mahatransco’s public relations officer confirmed the project has been planned specifically keeping in mind the future electricity requirements of the Purandar region in view of the proposed airport and the industrial and urban development expected in the coming years. The project will be implemented through the tariff-based competitive bidding mechanism with Saswad Transmission Limited, a special-purpose company established for the project, having been transferred to Mahatransco.

The Saswad substation is expected to support not just airport operations but the wider growth of residential areas, commercial establishments, educational institutions, hospitals and industries across the Purandar development belt that is expected to transform significantly once the international airport becomes operational. By targeting completion in January 2028 Mahatransco is ensuring that power transmission infrastructure is in place well before the airport and surrounding development generates peak electricity demand, addressing one of the most critical utility prerequisites for any major greenfield airport project. For a region that has seen rapid land acquisition progress following the Bombay High Court’s September 22 dismissal of farmers’ petitions against the airport, the Rs 740 crore power infrastructure commitment signals that Maharashtra is now building the entire ecosystem around Purandar airport simultaneously rather than waiting for the airport itself to be completed before addressing utility needs.
