Aundh, Baner and Mahalunge Power Supply at Risk as Highway Widening Keeps Damaging Underground Cables

02 Nov 2026

Repeated damage to underground electricity cables during the widening of the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway between Wakad Bridge and Chandani Chowk has put power supply to Aundh, Baner and Mahalunge at risk. MSEDCL reported three cable damage incidents on October 16, 17 and 31. On October 16, a 22 kV Beverly Feeder cable was damaged, and on October 17, a 22 kV Bitwise Nia Feeder cable was hit near Bitwise Chowk. MSEDCL alleges that construction continued despite repeated warnings to relocate cables before excavation. Its Baner branch has filed a police complaint against the contractor at Bavdhan Police Station, seeking legal action for damage to public property. The incidents have disrupted supply to consumers and caused losses of lakhs of rupees.

As per procedure, the agency must take an estimate from MSEDCL, get approval and complete cable relocation before construction begins. NHAI has taken this approval for work within PCMC limits, but officials say similar permission has not been obtained within PMC limits. MSEDCL also fears that roadside cables could end up under the widened carriageway or buried in concrete, making fault detection and repair extremely difficult. Digging up a concrete road to reach a damaged cable could delay restoration and hit lakhs of consumers. For residents of Aundh, Baner and Mahalunge, safe cable relocation has to happen before the road work moves any further.
