Rainwater leakage at Maan station of Metro Line 3 after heavy showers on Sunday has raised questions about construction quality, just before the Prime Minister inaugurated the corridor on Tuesday. Techies who depend on the Hinjawadi to Chh. Shivajinagar route wondered how a project of this scale could face a drainage problem before opening, and whether proper quality checks were done before it was declared ready for passengers. Earlier, water leakage at Swargate Metro station during heavy rain had also raised similar concerns. A Hinjawadi Maan resident, who has watched the corridor being built for three to four years, said the leak was not surprising and doubts over construction quality have always been there.
PMRDA officials blamed a choked rainwater drainage pipe and called it an isolated incident. Rainwater collected on the open-to-sky terrace slab of Maan station, overflowed, and seeped through a gap between the station box and the entry structure, showing up at the mezzanine level. The blockage has been cleared, and officials re-inspected terrace slabs, joints, drainage outlets and waterproofing at all 17 stations opening to the public on Wednesday. Residents want an independent third-party quality and safety audit of Maan station, and the whole corridor if needed. Sachin Londhe of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Societies Federation said the infrastructure should have been fully rainproof. For lakhs of commuters who have waited years for this Metro, a clean audit would do more than any inauguration speech.
