The Prime Minister on Tuesday virtually inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink Line) from Maan to District Court via the Hinjawadi IT hub, and launched other projects. The Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers and the Union Minister of State were present at the function in Pune. Addressing the gathering, Modi said his government had made ease of living and transportation for the urban middle class a priority. He said India’s Metro network has grown from 248 km in 2014 to around 1,200 km, with services in 26 cities against five earlier and over one crore passengers daily. In Maharashtra, he said, only 10 to 11 km was operational in 2014 and about 200 km is running now.
Calling Pune an important centre for IT, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, startups and manufacturing, the PM said Metro projects raise a city’s competitiveness by reducing travel time and increasing productivity. He recalled laying the foundation stone of Pune Metro’s first phase about 10 years ago and said the Pink Line will connect one of Pune’s biggest IT hubs, while further expansion will link the older and newer parts of the city. The PMRDA commissioner made the introductory presentation, and the late Ajit Pawar’s contributions to the project were recalled. For Hinjawadi’s IT commuters, the real test now is how the line performs day after day.
