PMC Seeks Fresh Environmental Clearance for Balbharati–Paud Phata Link Road After SC Order

19 Oct 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun the process of securing fresh environmental clearance for the long-debated Balbharati–Paud Phata link road, following directions from the Supreme Court. The apex court has temporarily halted construction of the 2.1 km project, emphasizing that work cannot proceed until the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) grants approval. The civic body has decided to appoint a consultant to carry out an environmental study and impact assessment, aiming to expedite the submission of required reports.

The proposed link road, designed to ease traffic on Law College Road, is a partially elevated corridor running parallel to it and passing along the foothills of Vetal Tekdi. The design includes noise barriers, cycling tracks, and pedestrian pathways. Environmental groups have opposed the project, arguing it could harm the surrounding green cover and biodiversity. The Supreme Court directed that the Environmental Impact Assessment Authority evaluate PMC’s application promptly, stressing the importance of balancing development with ecological conservation.
